Edmund is 13 months old today. It's amazing to us how the first year has come and gone and we are out of the baby stage and into full blown toddler mode.
In an attempt to keep Edmund out of trouble, we have started to baby proof cabinets that we don't want him to get into. For the most part, our house is the same as it was prior to walking. We have certain areas and items that we don't want Edmund to touch. Rather than putting them away, we tell him no when he touches them and he has learned what he shouldn't get into. He is pretty good about not getting into things, unless he is tired. Then he gets a glint in his eye and walks around touching everything he's not supposed to. We very quickly put him down for bed or for his nap.
This month Edmund has started running and for any first time parent, this is a bit scary. It has caused Edmund to fall down quite a bit lately and he has a few bruises on his head. He got his first "shiner" this month when his 3 year old aunt accidentally pushed him into a trombone case.
Luckily, he's a sturdy little guy and gets over hurting himself much quicker than we would think he would at this age. He also likes to run with things in his hands and to chase people. Here he is doing both - chasing mom with her belt triumphantly held in his hands.
Edmund has started to consistently say more words this past month. His most common words are - mom, dad, and num num when he is eating something he likes. We have also heard him say yes and milk, but not consistently enough to say he is actually saying them. Edmund has also started waving hello and goodbye this past month. We think it's pretty cute to go get him when he wakes up because he stands up quickly and waves. We have clapping and waving down. We are working on signing still. The only word he signs is "milk". We are hoping he will pick up the other dozen or so words we sign eventually.
We have had a very fun month this past month with a visit to the Grashorns in Indiana,
a trip to the Ohio State Fair,
lots of visits to the local park, playing in the pool,
and hiking at the Alum Creek State Park. We also took Edmund apple picking for the first time this season. We were delighted to find out that Edmund is capable and willing to eat an entire apple all by himself.
One area that we are struggling with Edmund is during nursery at church. With mom being on MOPS leadership, Edmund has had to spend more time in nursery and is having a tough time with it. The problem is that it is at 9:30, right when he is ready to go down for his morning nap. When Edmund is tired, he just wants to sleep and if he doesn't get to sleep, he gets grumpy. Luckily the women there have been nice enough to cuddle with him so that he takes a short nap. Otherwise, he will sit there and cry until mom is paged and come and gets him. When he gets down to one nap a day, it will be a bit easier. Until then, all we can do is just keep trying.
At 13 months, Edmund's favorite things are:
1) Dad - Although he loves his mama, there is something special about a boy and his dad. We have heard him wake up in the night and hear his little voice on the monitor whisper - dad? dad? Also, when dad comes home from work, he drops everything and makes a run for the door to be first to get a big hug.
2) Alphabet Song - We found an alphabet song on youtube that we play for him and he loves it.
3) Mickey Mouse Car and Farm - His two favorite toys to play with.
4) Touch and Feel Books - Edmund likes reading, but especially loves books that have soft things to touch in them. His favorite book is "That's Not My Tiger".
5) Eating - He's always hungry so he eats pretty much everything. I suppose that is why he is in the 99th percentile for height.
6) Bottles - This boy is not ready to give up his bottles and nursing yet. We have him down to one bottle and two nursings a day. We are working on getting him to drink cow's milk out of a sippy cup, but so far no dice. He will drink milk out of a bottle no problem. It's a work in progress, but we are shooting for having him off by the recommended 15 month mark.
7) Water - Whether it's in the pool, the bath, or splashing the water on his high chair tray, this little boy loves the water. He even likes to turn on the faucet so that he can stick his face in it during bath time.
8) Cuddling - With the reduction in nursing/bottles (he was at 6 at 12 months, so we are excited to be down to 3), Edmund has really been wanting more cuddle time before his naps. It is been really sweet to hold him and rock with him for a little while before placing him in his crib.

It has been another fun month watching Edmund grow into an independent little boy. We are looking forward to the fall and what the next season will bring.
