apple picking

There are days that I wish I could bottle up and open when I am having a crummy day. This past Saturday was one of those them. The day even started off on the right foot with us getting up as a family when we heard Edmund chirping from his room. We made blueberry pancakes and omelets for breakfast and enjoyed eating on our screen porch. It was a beautiful cool sunny morning and it was relaxing to have a nice leisurely time as a family.

I was looking forward to going apple picking that afternoon. Our family loves apples. Well, Eric and I love apples and we are hoping that we can get our child to love apples as much as we do. Even though Edmund is still a bit on the small side to apple pick, it's a tradition that we want to have with our family. We have gone every year since we have been together. Apples ripen early in Ohio so we thought we would get a head start and pick some early this year.

After Edmund's nap, we drove over to Utica to go to the orchard. This year we went to a place called Legend Hills Orchard. We had never been there before, but they were already picking five different types of apples, which was way more than many of the other orchards that I saw online. The drive went down a few beautiful country highways past old stately farms. It wound it's way through a few historic old downtown areas that we will have to go back again to someday to check out.

We made a pit stop on the way there at an estate auction that was happening. We saw a lot of old furniture for sale. There was nothing that we particularly needed or would look good in our house, but it was cool seeing the auctioneer working and people bidding on different items. Neither of us have ever been to an auction before, so it was well worth the short detour.

We finally made it to the orchard and found it to be fairly quiet. We were the only people there to pick our own apples, so we had the orchard to ourselves.

We picked the honeycrisp apples first since the two types of apples we wanted, ginger gold and honeycrisp, were on different sides of the orchard. We tried giving an apple to Edmund to hold. We weren't surprised that he would try to eat it because he pretty much tries to eat everything. We were quite surprised, though, that he actually liked it.

The only part he didn't like was when he dropped his half eaten apple in the dirt and mom refused to pick it back up to give to him to finish. We then had a full 1/2 bushel of honeycrisp and moved on to go pick some ginger gold.

Edmund was a good little apple picker and enjoyed watching us, although by the end he was ready for his second nap.

On the way out, there was someone who actually flew in their helicopter to the country store. We took a quick picture with it before leaving.

We then headed home and I made apple crisp for dessert. It was a perfect day.
