We love our son Edmund. Even though we are constantly telling him how much we love him, with this being his first Valentine’s Day, we thought we would make a short list of some of the things we love best about him.
We love –
How perfectly beautiful he is. From the time he was born, he came out perfect – he didn’t have any blemishes on him, all his fingers and toes, strong, and handsome. Everyone we know and meet gushes about how cute he is and we, as proud parents, have to agree. He has Eric’s gorgeous brown eyes and long eye lashes, Anna’s creamy fair skin and round rosy cheeks, and Eric’s long slender frame. He is a wonderful reflection of both of us, but also retains a look that is uniquely him.
How boyish he is. Our son has boy energy and lots of it. He loves pulling on things, and it’s amazing to see how strong (and a bit rough) he is. We sometimes wonder if he is going to destroy his play gym as he pulls the top of it almost down to his face. He enjoys banging his toys together, especially his stacking stars. He has this amazing curiosity and is into EVERYTHING and he’s not even crawling yet. He rolls around the living room to get to whatever he sees, knocking things over in his path, sometimes hitting furniture, rolling on top of poor Sophie who squeaks in protest. He is often deeply concentrating, and you can tell because you can see his little brow furrow, his mouth puckers, and he sticks out his little cheeks in contemplation. We wonder at how he can have such looks of intensity and we discuss visions of playing make believe with him and his great imagination.
How funny he is. He does things that he thinks are funny and waits for us to react, which of course we do. We especially love when he gets into laughing fits and he squeals with delight. He laughs at our silliness and loves to mirror us when we smile at him and when we make sounds at him. Often, if he is playing and notices that we aren’t watching him, he will stare at us with his eyebrows raised until we look at him and then he will smile and laugh and go back to whatever he was doing prior. He definitely keeps us entertained.
How good natured he is. No matter how grumpy he is, all we normally have to do is pick him up and he stops fussing. Or, if he has been crying and we bring him to a mirror, he stops to look at us and himself in the reflection. We think that he doesn’t like seeing himself look sad. His cry is rarely louder than a fuss (which we typically call grumping), which makes him so easy to be around. We pray that he will always be this well mannered.
How much we love him. Honestly, we could not have imagined a more wonderful, handsome, charming, cuddly little boy, nor could we imagine the intensity in which we love him. We have heard it said that the love between parents and children is the most Christ like love that we can achieve as humans, and now being parents, we believe it to be true. As much as we love each other, we are effortlessly and completely in love with our son.
Happy Valentine’s Day dearest Edmund!
Love,
mom and dad
